Pick n Pay | Taste Festival Interactive Cooking Experience

For the past 15 shows, Source has been running the Pick n Pay Chefs’ Theatre and Pick n Pay Wine & Canapé Experience at the various Taste Festivals around the country. Hosted in JHB, KZN and Cape Town on an annual basis, Taste is definitely one of our calendar highlights! Both tents that we manage are big attractions for those looking to gain some amazing cooking skills whilst enjoying their outing at this spectacular foodie event. Logistically, we liaise with all of the chefs before the show to ensure that all of their needs are met, we plan the equipment, and we source all the ingredients for the show. We create clever ways to teach guests how to make everyday ingredients into swish looking canapés in the wine & canapé theatre, and handle all staffing and basic logistics on site for our areas.

As the show has grown , we have become involved in assisting other stands, offering food logistics support to any vendor who needs it, and we look forward to many more years growing our footprint at Taste!

Pick n Pay | Super Animals Media Hampers

Source Food was tasked to conceptualise, design and develop hampers for Pick n Pay to launch their Super Animals campaign.  We designed customised boxes to be distributed to media, filled with kids’ animal masks, homemade cookies, cookie decorating kits and cute animal cupcakes to accompany and promote the Super Animals campaign.  This was a fun, interactive campaign, combining our love of food, design and marketing.  Watch the videos we did on our video production page and see the stills we shot and styled on out food styling page.

Jupiter Drawing Room for SASKO | Ultimate Braai Master Media Hampers

We were tasked to conceptualise a creative promotional hamper for the media and bloggers around Ultimate Braai Master for SASKO.  We developed a pot brood recipe, and instead of using a box or basket, we used South-African style cast iron potjies as the hamper base.  We filled these potjies with SASKO goodies, as well as designed and branded instructional recipe cards, laser cut wooden labels etc.

Le Creuset | Customer Evening Cooking Experience

The evening was held at the Le Creuset flagship store in Somerset mall, with loyal customers being treated to face to face interaction with the prestigious chef and famed cookware.  Source manages all the in store demos and demo chefs for Le Creuset stores, nationally. Le Creuset tasked Source with putting together a demo using a high profile chef. Source arranged Giorgio Nava the, Italian powerhouse chef to demo a few of his classic Italian dishes using the Le Creuset cookware.

SASKO | Kuier Pienk Plesier Event

Source Food was tasked to manage the Sasko activation at the annual Kuier Pienk Plesier event. This event is highly anticipated by hundreds of women in the Cape Town area, as it is a fun-filled day full of pampering and partying. This year it was held at the Century City Convention Centre and hosted 750 women.

As Sasko was a sponser at the event, we set up our beautiful, custom-built demonstration stand in the foyer, where we had Chef Mynhardt finishing off some delicious canapés, which were made using the Sasko products. Guests could come up and chat to Chef Mynhardt about the different products and their versatility, a well as taste the scrumptious food. These canapés were served to all the ladies in the pamper area. We also had promoters who were informing the ladies about the stand and the products, as well as handing out freshly baked Sasko Quick Treat cookies. Guests could have their photographs taken and printed as well.

Chef Mynhardt also did a live on-stage demonstration of the Sasko dessert, which was a decadent chocolate chip and cookie dough ice cream sandwich. This was then served to all the guests before an evening of singing, dancing and lots of wine was enjoyed.

AEG Event | Johannesburg

Source Food collaborated with the exceptional chef, David Higgs, in Johannesburg for the media showcase of exciting new @AEG appliances, a domestic version of a sous vide system and top of the range induction. David cooked an inspiring 4 course tasting menu focused on cooking root to stem, and nose to tail. This global trend of zero wastage on food products is the way we should be shopping, cooking and eating! Source was responsible for all behind the scenes prep work and logistics, allowing top chefs the opportunity to shine whilst managing their busy schedules.

Pick n Pay | Easter Promotional Media Hampers

Source Food was tasked to design, produce and deliver Easter Box hampers to the media.  These boxes were custom designed and made to suit the Easter campaign graphics for 2016.  The boxes were filled with the Pick n Pay Easter Range products, as well as some other product brands sold at Pick n Pay.

Jupiter Drawing Room for SASKO | World Baking Day Promotional Media Hampers

We developed these media and blogger hampers for SASKO for World Baking Day.  We developed a cookie recipe with the SASKO Cake Wheat Flour, and designed an instructional pamphlet and filled the hamper with SASKO embroidered aprons, oven gloves, kitchen towels, red spatulas and ingredients that we tailored to match the brand.  The most exciting part was the customised cookie cutters that Jupiter Drawing Room wanted, which we 3D printed.  Each box was very personalised: it included a cookie cutter of the blogger/influencer’s face, personalised instructions, and personalised name tags.  We distributed these hampers in Cape Town and Johannesburg, with a follow-up personalised competition winner hamper for the bloggers as well.

Jupiter Drawing Room for SASKO | Good Housekeeping Reader’s Event & Demonstration

With over 150 women at the Table Bay Hotel the Source team had the privilege of working with Jupiter Drawing room and the Sasko team to create a unique Sasko experience. The Source team created recipes, recipe cards, delicious canapés and a beautiful Sasko stand to display the full Sasko range. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Nederburg | Fruit Sushi development

Source was contacted by Grand to develop the concept of ‘Frushi’ – sushi made only with fruit elements for the Nederburg stand at the Distell Trade Show hosted at the Lord Charles Hotel.

4 groups of 20 guests were presented with Nederburg’s new strategy for 2016. After the presentation the guests were invited to taste ‘frushi’ with the vision of awakening all five senses. Source was responsible for developing the frushi, presenting and plating for the event.

Our final product was delicate, interesting and beautiful. Instead of seaweed nori, we made a fresh raspberry leather, the rice was flavoured with coconut, ginger and lemongrass; we filled the California roll with fresh paw paw, kiwi and pinepapple. We replaced mayo with reduced coconut cream and made balsamic flavoured pearls to replace the caviar.

Fruitspot | Cape Town Launch

For the launch of the Cape Town factory of the Johannesburg-based fruit & veg supplier, Fruitspot, we created a display to showcase all the fruit and veg and different cuts of produce they supply.

We arranged everything from equipment, bar set up, flower arrangements to waiters, signage and product display.  There was no kitchen on site, so our team set up a full kitchen in the Fruitspot offices.  All canapés were created using Fruitspot fruit and veg, one of our favourites being the little ‘veggie patch’ showcasing baby carrot, radish and baby corn on a basil mousse with olive soil.

Besides designing the new logo for Fruitspot, Source Food was also responsible for organising take-home gifts; a growing pot of herbs with a label including the Fruitspot details, and a topper to detail how to take care and water it.  This tied in with the brand’s tag line “anything fresher is still growing”.  We also designed nametags, a banner wall, aprons and display tags to add to the messaging of the fruit and veg table display.

FNB | Whisky Live Festival Food Activation

At the FNB Whisky Live Festival, Source managed the large-scale public catering for the event as well as bespoke corporate canapé parties for the VIPs and an interactive food activation for our client.We handled multiple stand designs for our catering stands and activations and designed and ran a fully operational onsite pop-up kitchen to service the public. The kitchen catered for 3000 people a night as well as for canapé parties for up to 600 people for three consecutive evenings. In addition to this, Source conceptualised and managed a 30-guest per show, hands-on interactive Whisky and Canapé pairing theatre.

We worked with the global leading food and whisky afficionado , Martine Nouet, who presented 3 whiskys in conjunction with our chef who showed guests how to create three simple canapes that paired with the whisky. An excellent showcase for brands to enhance their social media.


KENWOOD | Cook & Coffee

Source was given a wonderful brief from one of our most exciting clients, Kenwood. We were tasked to conceive a concept that best showcased their three brands at one stand at the Good Food & Wine show. All three brands Kenwood, De Longhi and Braun were to be included in the plan and we were to align this with their national marketing campaign where possible.

The theatre design went through many permutations, starting as a hands-on theatre with multiple stations and chefs, and finally becoming the Cook & Coffee theatre that was activated. We had a super high tech AV system which wowed the staff as well as brand demonstrations and Masterchef chefs doing cook-offs and demo’s.

In the Cook & Coffee Theatre top chefs representing each brand demonstrated some pretty impressive culinary skills for the public to watch.They all cooked and baked delicious and inventive recipes, showcasing the Kenwood , Braun and Delonghi equipment. Each show throughout the day was full of surprises with a cook-off and mystery baskets on the schedule.

In addition to conceptual work, stand manipulation, staffing and pre-show logistics, Source managed the theatre production, preparation of the chef’s demonstration ingredients and the overall running of the theatre.

Distell | Masterchef simulation

Distell asked Source to create a replica of the MasterChef kitchen for a private event. We designed a kitchen with fully-equipped participant workstations and arranged for MasterChef judge, Chef Pete Goffe–Wood to lead the class.

Source supplied all the food, equipment, staff and project managed operations on the day. We ensured that all Chef Goffe-Wood had to do was arrive, give the amazing demonstration and leave once the class was done, while we took care of the rest.

Source managed this bespoke brand activation from concept to completion, enabling the client to mingle with their guests and enjoy the occasion.

Distell | collison’s cosmo experience

Source created an interactive brand activation for Collison’s White Gold Brandy at the SA Brandy Festival.

The Collison’s Cocktail and Canapé Theatre saw Cosmopolitan’s hottest bartender and Source‘s talented chef guide the guests through a brandy and food pairing. At this tailored brand experience, guests made their own canapés and cocktails, which they were of course able to enjoy throughout the show.

Pick n Pay | Chef’s Theatre

The Taste Pick n Pay Chefs Theatre has been an integral part of all Taste shows since inception. This is a cool calm space for festival goers to enjoy a complimentary sparkling wine cocktail, a free Fresh Living magazine and watch the best local chefs create dishes especially for the shows. A demonstration on the hour of every show created some tight turnaround times in terms of show logistics, Source Food has a team of qualified chefs in each region (CPT; JHB; KZN) to satisfy all mise-en-place and procurement for the celebrity chefs. All stand logistics, recipe development, procurement; equipment sourcing; staffing and training is handled by Source as well as on show management of the entire theatre.

Dstv Hotstuff

Dstv hosted 4 events (2 breakfasts and 2 lunches) for the media, themed ‘Hotstuff’.  We created some fun, themed branding including menu cards, toppers with quirky lines, table confetti and straw tags to accompany our colourful brunch and lunch canapés.

Pick n Pay | Taste Of Cape Town

With Newlands cricket pitch as the setting the Source team had the exciting task of catering for the WeChat cricket box. Upmarket street food as the brief the Source team had to get creative, slow cooked balsamic honey pulled pork slider with pickled red cabage and coriander, roasted oats and almond crumbed Elgin chicken strips with sweet corn and savoy cabbage slaw was just a taste of what we had to offer. The Source team were also responsible for all the hiring of cutlery and crockery.

Galbani | Chef’s Theatre

To showcase the launch of a new range of upmarket Italian cheese lines, Parmalat via agency used Source Food to conceptualise an Italian feast with cooking demo’s by an Italian chef using the new lines. We showcased a fresh mozzarella and mascarpone in three dishes which were prepared by a chef on the stand. A learning experience plus a tasting and brand engagement strategy gave this event the edge. We created take home value in the form of branded recipe cards of the recipes used as well as product to allow guests to recreate at home. Keep viewing our experiential food marketing portfolio.

Dstv Delicious

DStv Delicious is a fab food and music festival held in JHB on an annual basis. 2014 was our second year creating a spectacle for DStv subscribers to watch a hands-on fast paced cooking show at the festival.This year we worked with The Food Network to create an exciting interactive cooking theatre where Food Network celeb chefs, Sibu Mtongana and Jenny Morris showed off some of their favourite dishes to a cheering foodie crowd. Our job was to create a demo kitchen, designed by our clients, manage the stand build with our trusted stand designers, and handle all food logistics on-site pre and during the event.Source also catered for a VIP champagne breakfast on the day of the event.

SA potato board | Potato love bites

Potatoes SA briefed Source to formulate ideas to create ‘Potato Love Bites’ showcasing three variants of potatoes best showing off their properties, mash & bake; chip and boil & roast . We had a lot of fun playing around with loads of delicious recipes which best highlighted the capabilities of each potato style. We made 7000 canapés for the event over 3 days, and the potato adoring public ate every last Love Bite!

Source was not only responsible for the concept, preparation of all food and potato props for the stand, but staffing and on-site logistics, as well as ensuring that the stand was run professionally, all food was safe and served at its optimum, and there was strong customer engagement by the promoters on the stand.

Pick n Pay | Shopping Mall Chef Demonstrations

Wet demo’s and chef demonstrations inside shopping malls, or retailers is a necessary part of product promotion, allowing shoppers to gain insight into how to prepare and use a product as well as getting them to taste it is a sure way to ensure a purchase. Source Food cooking teams have been placed in stores and malls nationwide to promote many different food products. We have designed a multitude of on-the-go chef demonstrations units to fit a clients requirements and budget.

Freshpak | Chef Demonstration

This bespoke brand activation saw Source’s Kirsty Rowett run an interactive demonstration workshop showcasing the product in progressive and exciting ways. Freshpak Rooibos iced teas were paired with delicious canapés and guests were invited to get creative by designing their own iced tea recipe.

Pick n Pay | World Emoji Day


We designed and printed these limited Emoji vouchers for Pick n Pay on World Emoji Day.  1000 of these were dropped into home deliveries to promote online shopping.

Robertson’s | Burger theatre

This innovative hands on cooking theatre was a hit with guests at the Taste of Cape Town and Taste of Jo’burg shows. We showcased well know local chefs Justin Bonello and others, showing guests how to cook the perfect burger using Robertsons spices to add flavor. Guests made three burgers / sliders each which were then grilled on the braai by our team of chefs. A very popular hands on class where guests learnt a lot, had a lot of fun and took home some great prizes.


Hammerlive | Santam Master Chocolatier

Not all of our clients are food brands, and these are the challenges we love the most. Our client on this event wanted to bring to life the mantra that attention to detail, craftsmanship and care is their approach to insurance. They requested we create an artisan chocolatier stand to showcase just how perfection can be achieved, and how this craftsmanship echoes the ethos of the brand.

Source was responsible for preparing a variety of artisan chocolate truffles on site at Sun City, 2100 in total over the 2 days!
