It’s Heritage Day tomorrow and we, South Africans, love to get together and celebrate with a ‘lekker’ old braai!
A side many have come to love at a braai – is the famous ‘braai broodjie’ and although we love a good traditional recipe here at Source Food, we prefer to get all fancy and be innovative. We have tried and tested 3 braai broodjie recipes that you can find below. Try it this Braai Day and share your pictures with us – we’d love to hear your feedback and see what the favourite is! These recipes can even be used as a starter, main and dessert if you’re having a party – it doesn’t have to be a side or second to the meat…but then again, is a braai really a braai without a ‘tjop’? 😉
First off, we have the CHEESE MONSTER – great for a starter, or to replace the garlic bread.
1 x tub of cream cheese
250 g cheddar
250 g blue cheese
Bacon (if you have vegetarian guests on the list, just leave the bacon off)
(Side note: the quantities are just a guideline, you can add more or less as per taste!)
Cut a strip out of the top of the baguette and hollow it out a little.
Spread tomato chutney on the inside.
Line the base with bacon.
Mix the 3 cheeses in a bowl and stuff the baguette.
Wrap the baguette in foil and braai until golden.
Should take about 20 min.

Then we have the ULTIMATE, which can easily be used as a main.
60 g of caramelised onion
About 8 slices of chorizo (ours was home-cured by our awesome chef, Jess)
About 30 g of feta.
1 – 2 tbsp. of basil pesto
Handful of slow roasted cherry tomatoes or sun-dried tomatoes
Spread the basil pesto on the inside of the ciabatta.
Layer with caramelised onion.
Top with feta and tomatoes.
Braai! (To get a nice charred texture and taste, do not wrap this one in foil.)
Should take about 15 – 20 min.
Last, but definitely not least, we have the CHOC MALLOW.
1/2 of a banana, sliced
60 g of chocolate spread
2 marshmallows, chopped
Cut the roll in half and hollow it out.
Stuff the roll with all the ingredients and wrap the roll in foil.
Place on braai until golden.
Should take about 10-15 min.
