‘Payeya’ or Paella, regardless of pronunciation, this Catalan dish is delicious in every language! A recent holiday in Spain, we chased down many variants of this simple dish of seafood and rice. Each quite delicious in their own rite, we all had our favourite favourite. Spain in renowned for tasty food, and their focus on growing and harvesting great produce, and serving ingredients in their prime is the reason their food is some of the best in Europe. Toasted bread rubbed with tangy cut garlic and sun ripened tomato cheeks, crispy fried calamari – no lemon, it makes the batter soggy!, and Jamon iberico Belotta were some of the highlights of the cuisine we sampled over our 10 day trip to Barcelona. There are a few must-do’s at Cal Pep – the tiniest tapas bar in El Born with the coolest staff and the most insane tortilla (spanish omelette with potato and chorizo) is an absolute must. Martinez ( http://www.martinezbarcelona.com/) on top of the mountain Montjuic, is spectacular for tapas, olives and paella. Their patatas bravas was voted number 1 by half the members of the team, whilst the others voted La Bottega the best by far. The little brother of the world famous Tickets, did not disappoint. In fact, probably a highlight of our trip was sneakily getting a table there without a booking, and ordering the ’surprise’ menu, by which they mean, they will bring you whatever they feel like, until you are full! From a combo of oysters and foie gras – eaten simultaneously for best results, by order of the chef, to the gelatinous pods of olive brine which look and feel like an olive until they pop in your mouth in a shower of salty amazingness, this restaurant is an absolute spectacular. The food across Barcelona is top quality and judging by the plethora of restaurants, few people cook at home. Conversely the fresh markets are phenomenal, the Ramblas market being world famous, but as cool are the lesser known el mercado Catherina and mercado Princessa – which is more an “eat now” kind of vibe. Loved everything about Barcelona and the cool food… expect to see some awesome tapas and pinxtos on the @sourcefood menus in the near future!
